The Trick Is Not The Trick

Service Description

Workshop Description: In my practice, I am always curious about the colours we can give to “tricks,” rather than the tricks themselves. What happens when we stop looking at technique as something to perfect and instead treat it as material to play with, transform and reimagine? In this experimental and playful workshop, we will dive into generic techniques as we know them: cartwheels, scorpions, versions of back-planches, meathooks, ascends and descends and other familiar elements. Rather than focusing on achieving a clean or technically “correct” version of these movements, we will approach them as empty canvases—starting points that can be stretched, distorted, interrupted, combined and splashed with new, unexpected colours. Together, we will explore how small changes in rhythm, direction, intention, shape, texture and quality can completely transform a familiar technique. We will play with what happens before, after and in between the recognisable forms, questioning where a trick begins and where it ends. The aim is not to abandon technique, but to loosen our relationship with it and discover how much possibility can exist inside something we already know. The workshop is an invitation to get curious about the space between repetition and invention: to use technique as a tool for composition, expression and play rather than as an end point in itself. Ultimately, I want to stimulate the playful and creative senses—the parts that ask what else could this be? This will help each person in creating personal sequences and developing their own signature moves by giving us permission to experiment, fail, exaggerate and find new ways of moving through something familiar. Pre-requisites: Intermediate level on the rope: Feeling comfortable and free in basic positions and pathways.
