The Dance of Tensegrity
SUN 9 AM | Balance and Activation with Mimi Ke
Service Description
Tensegrity | Short for tensional integrity, is a structural design principle. It uses isolated hard pieces under compression (like rods or struts) that float inside a continuous network of pulled pieces under tension (like cables or strings). The rigid pieces never touch each other, creating stable and surprising floating shapes. In this workshop, we’ll explore how to influence our movement through tensegrity, and bring a delicacy and sensitivity to our personal practice. Have you ever experienced that feeling when your body flows effortlessly, radiating energy and ease? Or when you see a basic climb, a simple skill that feels activated and suspended? Along with technical skills, this is often what people see as artistic or visual quality of movement. Our bodies are designed to move on spirals. Like DNA spirals, animal movement, water flow and tree trunks. By tuning into our intrinsic systems of spirals, undulations and curves, we can give our movements more choreographic freedom and intent. For example, a single arm hang can turn into a place of stability and exploration instead of a fight against time. Through imagery, cueing and simple aerial sequences inspired by movement spirals, we’ll explore how to activate the whole body tensegrity and how we can ride gravity using tension and the concept of tensegrity. While this is just an approach to practice, the aim is to develop a more sustainable and personal method of moving through the silks." Pre Reqs None
