Hearing With The Body
FRI 4 PM | Listening, Responding and allowing music to move through the body with Clara Botros
Service Description
This workshop is an ode to the artistry of every body, and to the uniqueness of every rope artist and their personal experience of the apparatus. At the heart of the workshop is musicality: listening, responding, and allowing music to move through the body rather than simply moving alongside it. We’ll step away from technicalities, tricks, and visual outcomes, and turn our attention toward sensation, impulse, speed, rhythm, sound, and the physical vocabulary we already carry. I’ll share my own approach to improvising on rope, developed through my personal relationship with music, movement, and the apparatus. Rather than teaching a fixed vocabulary or a formula for improvisation, I’ll offer the tools and ways of listening that have shaped my own practice, inviting everyone to take what resonates and make it their own. Through sensory and musical exercises — on the floor and in the air, with and without vision — we’ll explore how different sounds, rhythms, textures, and musical impulses can translate into movement. We’ll experiment with leading from different parts of the body, following impulses, playing with rhythm and timing, and allowing movement to become increasingly instinctive. The aim is not to find one “correct” way of dancing in the air, but to develop a deeper awareness of your own musicality and discover how your body, your movement vocabulary, and your relationship with the rope can create your own unique way of improvising. Pre-requisites: intermediate level on the rope: feeling comfortable and free in basic positions and pathways.
